JUDAS MACCABAEUS

GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL (1685-1759)

Dr Thomas Morell’s libretto is based on the events of 165 BC recorded in the Book of Maccabees, when Judas ‘the hammerer’ led Jewish forces against the invading Seleucid king Antiochus IV ‘Epiphanes’. The Gideon-like Jewish hero won brilliant victories against numerically-superior forces. Fighting for their ‘liberties, religion and laws’, the Jews rid the nation of Greek-inspired paganism, hitherto welcomed by liberal sections within the nation. An assault on all things Jewish by Antiochus led to widespread cruel persecution. The godly, patriotic and aged Mattathias killed a compromising Jew who engaged in pagan sacrifice. He then called upon other loyalists to follow him and his five sons, John, Simon, Judas, Eleazar and Jonathan, to the mountains, from where a series of effective guerilla campaigns were launched. While the heroism of Judas is justly celebrated, his brother Eleazar’s suicidal exploit in piercing the under-belly of one of the enemy’s ‘tank regiment’ elephants is also remembered. Judas’ cleansing of the Temple in Jerusalem is commemorated by the Feast of Hanukkah (alluded to in John 10:22).
The LORD’s Compassion

THE LORD'S COMPASSION!

What amazing grace Christians are called to proclaim to the world! Focusing initially on our Saviour's parable of the prodigal son, followed by a detour to Paul's letter to the Ephesians, Dr Clifford poses a question: "Are we thrilled and amazed at the Gospel?" If not, why not? Is there not a crisis in the church that we are not more zealous in reaching out? If so, then why? An answer is given to these urgent questions. In the course of his exposition, Dr Clifford cites John Calvin as both a rebuke and an inspiration for Gospel outreach in today's world. https://youtu.be/0el0brI3MKA
Approaching the End

APPROACHING THE END

As I approach my inevitable demise, my dear friend Dr Hazlett Lynch has asked me for a testimony, for the encouragement of others. I am asked to focus on my deepest thoughts as a Christian man in his eighties, my fears and doubts, and how I defeat them; what I am looking forward to; any uncertainties I might have and how I deal with them.
Blunder in Bala (1823)
by Dr Alan C. Clifford "BE BIBLICAL, BALANCED AND ABOVE-BOARD" On a crucial point of gospel doctrine, such criteria for a Christian confession were absent in the formulation and final discussion of the Calvinistic Methodist Confession of Faith in 1823.
The Coronation – A Prayer For The King
KING ALFRED THE GREAT (871-901), KING EDWARD VI (1547-53), KING WILLIAM III & QUEEN MARY II (1689-1702) AND OTHERS GAVE THIS NATION A CHRISTIAN FOUNDATION. KING CHARLES III IS PROMOTING THE VALUES OF OUR BIBLEBASED PROTESTANT CHRISTIAN CULTURAL HERITAGE, ACCORDING TO HIS CORONATION OATH
THE FIGHT OF FAITH. Christian Soldiers in Spiritual Conflict
In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul expounds the Christian Faith. We learn the great truths of salvation — the redeeming work of the glorious triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Chapter 1). We also learn that because of our sin, we are powerless to save ourselves unless God exerts the power of His grace (chapter 2). Having established our minds and hearts in the truth and experience of the Gospel, Paul then directs how we should live in relation to others in (1) wider society, (2) the fellowship of the church and (3) within our families (chapters 3-6: 9).
Studies in the Minor Prophets

JONAH – GOD’S PROPHET FOR TODAY (1)

A MESSAGE FOR A DISOBEDIENT PROPHET

We explore the fascinating narrative of God’s call to the prophet Jonah. His disobedience, fear and failure are warnings to us all. Are we walking with the LORD or away from the LORD?

JONAH – GOD’S PROPHET FOR TODAY (2)

A MESSAGE OF ‘SOVEREIGN-GRACE’ SALVATION

A second look at the Prophet Jonah. Stressing the integrity of the Bible's record and the relevance of this teaching for today, Pastor Alan explores Jonah's experience in the belly of the great fish - his cry, his confession and his 'come back'. His conclusion is shared by every true Christian: "Salvation is of the LORD." In the evening we revisit our Lord’s high-priestly prayer in John 17. In this second sermon, Pastor Alan explores the doctrinal and personal/pastoral implications of the sovereignty of God in our salvation, providing clarification over misunderstandings of a glorious but sometimes abused subject.

JONAH – GOD’S PROPHET FOR TODAY (3)

A MESSAGE FOR NATIONS IN CRISIS

The tyrannical, violent, idolatrous and wicked city of Nineveh was under the wrath of God. Yet this Almighty God of mercy as well as justice delights to save. The Prophet Jonah (saved and restored to obedience) was sent to call the people to repentance. The message has powerful relevance and application for today.

JONAH (4) – THE REBUKED HYPERCALVINIST

A MESSAGE FOR THE CHURCH IN CRISIS

In this fourth and final sermon on Jonah, Dr Clifford exposes the tragic negativity of the prophet. Suggesting a more positive hypothetical conclusion, we learn some urgent lessons for today's churches. Do we have the global vision the Gospel demands or are we content with a narrow horizon? The message presents a challenge we dare not ignore.

The Christianity of Jesus Christ
WORDS OF WONDER – CHRIST’S HIGH PRIESTLY PRAYER
  1. CHRIST'S PRAYER - ITS COMFORT & CHALLENGE (John 17 overview)
Dr Clifford’s summary exposition of Christ's 'High Priestly' Prayer. With amazing profundity, the Lord Jesus speaks with Authority on Sovereignty, Particularity, Security, Sanctity, Universality and Unity with astonishing Sublimity. The Church's most urgent need is to grasp accurately the vital importance of this prayer. Without it, Christian witness has no integrity in the world. YouTube:  https://youtu.be/b9H_rZKdqDA
  1. CHRIST’S PRAYER – CLARIFYING HIS CONCERNS 1 (John 17:1-11)
As Jesus concentrates on the salvation of God’s chosen ones, does the particularism of John 17:9 conflict with the universalism of John 3:16? No, provided it is properly understood. Since this passage is associated with debates over Calvinism, Dr Clifford clarifies our biblical understanding with the aid of John Calvin, Richard Baxter and J. C. Ryle. • CHRIST’S PRAYER – CLARIFYING HIS CONCERNS 2 (John 17:12-17)
  • Further exploring Christ's prayer, Dr Clifford shows that the Lord's concerns should be our concerns. After seeing the Trinitarian implications of our Saviour's prayer, we discover (1) His concern with our eternal security; (2) His desire to separate us from the evils of the world, and (3) His purpose to fill us with joy. Such are some of the essential features of true Christian life and experience. YouTube: https://youtu.be/s2zwFjl8XnY
    1. CHRIST’S PRAYER – CLARIFYING HIS CONCERNS 3 (John 17:17-23)
We now focus on our Saviour's concerns for the holiness of His Church, its global evangelistic outreach and its unity. Citing historical examples, Dr Clifford examines and exposes the scandals of disunity. Aided by the challenge of Richard Baxter and others, we are exhorted heartily to embrace our Lord's concerns. Otherwise, how dare we expect the world to listen to our message? YouTube: https://youtu.be/3wx-ECz8qu8
    1. CHRIST'S PRAYER - THE CLIMAX (John 17:24-6)
The conclusion to our Saviour's prayer is a climax that explains all (Jn 17:24-6). It is prayed to His 'Righteous Father'. It is precisely because we are 'unrighteous' that we need the righteous Father's gift of His righteous Son. Only through the righteousness earned for us by Christ's righteous sacrifice can we become sinners saved from His wrath. Thus we become a saved people, God's righteous Church.
